The profile
What makes a canvas float.
The canvas sits inside the frame instead of under a lip, so nothing covers the edges of your painting. A thin, even gap runs all the way around, and that line of shadow is what makes it look like it's floating.
See it first
Frame it before you order it.
Pick a wood, set your canvas size, and add a photo of your art. When it looks right, take it straight to that frame with everything filled in.

Questions people ask.
Don't see yours? Every email comes straight to me, and I usually answer within a business day.
andrew@atlaswoodcompany.com01How do I measure my canvas?
Measure the canvas itself, not the image and not an old frame. Run the tape across the front, edge to edge, for both width and height. The nearest 1/8 inch is perfect, and fractions or decimals both work.
For depth, measure from the wall side of the canvas to the painted face. If a canvas isn't perfectly square, give me the larger number. I check every measurement before I cut.
02Which depth do I need?
Most store-bought canvases are about 3/4" deep. Gallery-wrapped canvases, where the painting continues around the sides, are usually about 1 1/2". Thin panels and boards are usually 1/8" to 1/4".
Choose the depth that matches your art, from 1/8" to 2". The frame's recess is cut to that depth so the face of your piece sits right where it should.
03Can you frame a painting on a thin panel?
Yes. The same frame works for canvas panels, hardboard and gessoed panels like Gessobord and Claybord, flat wood panels, and aluminum composite (ACM or Dibond). Choose the depth that matches the panel, usually 1/8" or 1/4", and choose Thin panel or board when you order so I build the frame for adhesive instead of screws.
Painted on a cradled panel with deep wood sides? That goes in with screws, just like a canvas.
04Which wood should I choose?
Walnut is deep brown with dramatic grain, and mellows slowly to a warmer brown over the years. White oak is light and textured, with a modern edge. Cherry starts a soft pinkish brown and deepens to a rich red as it ages. Maple is the lightest and quietest, for when you want the art to carry the room.
Still deciding? The sample set puts all four next to your art for $10.
05What sizes can you build?
Any size from 8 × 10 to 36 × 48. Choose Custom size on any frame page and enter your canvas to the nearest 1/8 inch; your price appears instantly.
Larger than 36 × 48? Send me the size and I'll quote it personally.
06What does the frame look like on the wall?
A 1/2" face by a 2" deep profile: slim from the front, substantial from the side. A 3/16" reveal runs around your canvas, so a thin, even line of shadow makes it look like it's floating. The outside of the frame measures your canvas size plus 1 3/8" in width and height.
07How long does it take, and what does shipping cost?
Every frame is built to order, so most ship in about two weeks. Shipping is always free, with tracking. Need it by a certain date? Email me before you order and I'll tell you honestly whether I can make it.
08How does it go together and hang?
D-rings and picture wire come already installed. A stretched canvas goes in with the steel mounting screws I include, driven through the back of the frame into the stretcher bars.
A thin panel or board, like a canvas panel, hardboard, a flat wood panel or aluminum composite, is too thin for screws. Tell me it's a panel when you order. I leave the shelf inside the frame unfinished where it sits and include a tube of clear adhesive. A dab on each spot, center it with a couple of cards, rest something light on top for 24 hours, and it's done.
